X-MoTion

Re-Imagine Video via Re-Contextualized Semantics

Intelligent Creation, ByteDance
TL;DR

Give X-MoTion any driving video and a reference image. It moves the semantics of the video (motion, structure, camera path, visual effects, shot transitions) onto the new subject, even when the two are badly misaligned.

Abstract

We present X-MoTion, a self-supervised framework for in-context spatio-temporal video reimagination via re-contextualized semantics. Given an arbitrary driving video, X-MoTion animates a distinct reference image under the joint guidance of global textual instructions and a comprehensive spectrum of spatio-temporal visual semantics, including motion, structure, camera trajectories, visual effects, and shot transitions. In contrast to prior video editing and human motion transfer methods that rely on rigid spatial alignment or domain-specific motion priors, our approach faithfully transfers the semantic essence of unconstrained driving videos to novel reference images, even amidst substantial spatial misalignment and pronounced structural or textural discrepancies. Technically, we augment a pre-trained text-video Multi-Modal Diffusion Transformer (MMDiT) with a learnable auxiliary branch that injects fine-grained spatio-temporal context from a driving video. This semantic branch operates in parallel to the dual text and video streams; it processes VLM-encoded latents and concatenates them with global text tokens and video noise latents along the sequence axis. Unlike prior approaches dependent on large-scale, synthetic cross-paired datasets, X-MoTion acquires transferable semantic conditioning via self-supervision on unpaired, in-the-wild videos. Our calibrated progressive training strategy for in-context conditioning, combined with spatial and textural augmentations, effectively disentangles semantic motion from pixel-level details, which can be further enhanced with a minimal number of paired examples. Extensive experiments demonstrate that X-MoTion enables generalized, high-fidelity video transformations, supporting diverse applications such as generic motion transfer, multi-shot video remixing, and text-instructed spatio-temporal editing.
